UNIVERSITY at BUFFALO - COMPUTER SCIENCE & ENGINEERING (CSE) DEPARTMENT

The Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) Department at the State University of New York at Buffalo (UB) is one of the first Computer Science degree programs in the world (established in 1967) and one of the largest. With more than 35 full-time faculty members and over 850 graduate and undergraduate students, our graduate program offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science, and consistently ranks among the top 60 best programs in the United States.

CSE faculty are experts in their fields, and perform world-class and cutting-edge research. They include award-winning researchers and teachers (including 9 NSF CAREER Award recipients), members of prestigious editorial boards, and fellows of the ACM, IEEE, and AAAI. They have founded and direct major centers and laboratories devoted to big data analytics, biomedical computing, biometric systems, cloud computing, smartphones, robotics, computer security and information assurance, high performance computing, networking and distributed systems, multimedia databases and information retrieval, computer vision and information visualization, pattern recognition, machine learning, data mining, VLSI and computer architecture, and computational theory. CSE faculty were ranked 21st nationwide for attracting federal funding to perform state-of-the art computer science research in a recent survey by NSF.

Our graduates are highly sought after by academia and industry, and have been hired by major IT companies such as Microsoft, IBM, Google, Amazon, Facebook, and VMware. Our world-known graduates include: Carl Kesselman (co-inventor of Grid Computing), Robin Li (founder of baidu.com -- Chinese Google), Bruce Shriver (past president of IEEE Computer Society), and Max Nikias (provost of University of Southern California). Our Ph.D. graduates often obtain very competitive faculty positions at top 100 research universities.

The CSE department is located in a brand-new $75-million, state-of-the-art classroom and laboratory building. This building also features a cybertorium or smart auditorium, outfitted with the most sophisticated communications devices and smart technologies. Flexible research labs, classrooms, and meeting areas foster interdisciplinary work.

UB CSE has unique funding and research opportunities for Ph.D. students, with most admitted students receiving financial aid through TA, RA, or different fellowship programs. Please see the attached brochure and visit us at http://www.cse.buffalo.edu/ for more information, and feel free to send any inquiries to cse-gradinfo@buffalo.edu. The online application deadline for graduate studies at UB CSE is December 31st, 2013, and all supporting documentation is due January 15th, 2014.
