Comparative Analysis of Video Codec Efficacy in 3D Graphics Compression

Abstract

           The increasing demand for immersive media applications has led to the development of new technologies such as video-based point cloud compression (V-PCC) and computer-generated holography (CGH) compression. The vast amounts of data generated by immersive media applications underscore the need for efficient compression techniques. This thesis presents a comparative analysis of video codec efficacy in V-PCC and CGH compression techniques. The study explores the performance of various video codecs, including MPEG advanced video coding (AVC), High-Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), three-dimensional extensions of HEVC (3D-HEVC), essential video coding (EVC), versatile video coding (VVC) and V-PCC, in point cloud and RGBD-based holographic data compression. The evaluation focuses on compression ratio, subjective and objective visual quality, and computational complexity. The research also investigates the impact of different compression parameters on the overall performance of the codecs. The findings of this study provide valuable insights into the strengths and weaknesses of different video codecs for point cloud and holographic data and can inform the development of more efficient and effective video-based 3D graphics compression techniques for immersive data. This thesis contributes to the growing body of research on 3D graphics compression and its applications in emerging technologies such as virtual and augmented reality.
